Do I need to inspect my Telehandler?

Under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code, there is no specific regulation that explicitly mandates non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections for telehandlers. However, general provisions in the OHS Code, as well as industry standards and manufacturer guidelines, may imply inspection requirements to ensure the safe operation of such equipment.

Here are the key relevant points:

Employer Responsibilities (General Duty Clause)

Section 2 of the OHS Act states that employers must ensure the health and safety of workers by maintaining equipment in a safe operating condition. This includes following manufacturer-recommended inspections, which could involve NDT for critical components. I have seen OHS officers use this section as a “catch-all” for any dangerous use of equipment.

Equipment Inspections (OHS Code, Part 6 – Cranes, Hoists, and Lifting Devices),

  • If a telehandler is used as a lifting device (e.g., with lifting attachments like forks or winches), Part 6 of the OHS Code applies. This part requires:
    • Regular inspections and maintenance of lifting equipment per manufacturer specifications or recognized standards.
    • Inspection records to be kept.
  • For structural components that could affect safety, NDT may be required if recommended by the manufacturer or during periodic inspections by a qualified technician.

Standards for Structural Integrity

  • If the telehandler is suspected of structural damage (e.g., cracks in the boom or other load-bearing parts), then an NDT inspection should be performed to make sure the integrity of the boom is still intact.
  • Alberta OHS doesn’t reference any CSA codes for Telehandlers, but if it did you still wouldn’t be required to get your unit NDT inspected every year. You would only need to get an NDT inspection done if you suspect there is a defect while doing your daily or periodic inspection.

Custom Use or Modifications

If the telehandler is modified or used in a manner beyond standard operations, additional inspection, including NDT, may be necessary to ensure safety.

Summary:

While the Alberta OHS Code does not explicitly require NDT inspections for telehandlers, ensuring compliance with:

  • Manufacturer guidelines,
  • CSA or other recognized safety standards, and
  • Periodic inspections for structural integrity

may necessitate NDT in certain cases. If you need further information or would like to discuss getting your telehandler inspected please give us a call.
